What is India Post?

India Post, officially known as the Department of Posts (DoP), operates under the Ministry of Communications in India. It is the world’s largest postal network, often referred to as "the Post Office" in India. Established in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie, India Post was modernized with uniform postage rates and the introduction of the India Post Office Act of 1854, which improved upon earlier legislation. This act also created the position of Director General of Post to oversee postal services across the country.

India Post provides a variety of services including mail delivery, money transfers via money orders, and savings schemes under Small Savings Schemes. It also offers insurance services through Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), along with retail services such as bill payments and the sale of government forms. Additionally, India Post assists the Government of India with tasks like disbursing pensions and payments under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). With over 155,000 post offices, India Post has the most extensive postal network globally.
